Fiqh

The Fiqh component of the Al-Ihsan curriculum is integrated within multi-year programs that cover a vast range of subjects, including Arabic language, Hadith, Tafsir, Sirah (Prophetic biography), Islamic Principles, and Aqida (creed).

Foundational Stage (Years 1-2)

The early stages focus on essential, practical daily life matters to build a strong foundation of observance.

  • Uloom-ul-Fiqh Course: A dedicated one-year course is designed to acquaint participants with general Islamic jurisprudence and enable them to understand ancient and modern jurisprudential issues of daily life according to Shariah.

  • Fiqh of Worship (Ibadah): Covers detailed rulings on purification (tahara), prayer (salat), fasting, zakat, and hajj.

  • Core Texts: Introduction to basic Fiqh texts like Fiqh Al Muyassar or Maraqi Al Sa'dat to establish core rulings.

Intermediate Stage (Years 3-4)

Building on foundations, the intermediate years introduce the methodology of legal reasoning and expand into social and economic issues.

  • Usul al-Fiqh (Principles of Jurisprudence): Students learn the principles and methods for deriving legal rulings from the primary sources (Qur'an and Sunnah).

  • Fiqh of Transactions (Muamalat): Covers issues related to business, finance, and social interactions.

  • Fiqh of Family Law: Topics related to marriage, divorce, and inheritance.

Advanced Stage (Year 5 and Beyond - Licence in Islamic Scholarship - LITRP)

The advanced level (LITRP) involves in-depth study of complex jurisprudential issues and comparative fiqh across the various schools of thought (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali).

  • Advanced Fiqh Studies: Detailed analysis of contemporary fiqh issues (fiqh nazili) and application of usul al-fiqh in a modern context.

  • Research and Ifta: Training in research methodologies within Islamic law, sometimes leading to the capacity to issue formal religious opinions (fatwas) through their Darul Iftaa (fatwa house).

Curriculum Methodology

The program emphasizes a combination of:

  • Authenticity: Adherence to the authentic teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah.

  • Traditional Knowledge: Utilizing classical texts and scholarly interpretations that have been preserved over centuries.

  • Contemporary Relevance: Applying traditional knowledge to modern challenges faced by Muslims in North America.

  • Practical Application: Exercises and workshops to help students implement the teachings in their daily lives.
